Dr.
Daniel Susott was born in Waco, Texas, USA on September 3,
1951. His mother, grandfather, and great grandmother were
physicians. His father was an Air Force pilot and investor.
Daniel's mother tongue is English but his other languages include
Spanish, French, German, Thai, Cambodian, Russian, and Indonesian.
He received
his MD (Doctor of Medicine) in 1978 and a Masters Degree in Public
Health (MPH) in 1982, both from the University of Hawaii. Dr.
Susott is currently volunteer Medical Director of Airline
Ambassadors International (www.airlineamb.org)
and has organized missions to Central America, Sri Lanka,
Dominican Republic, and Myanmar. Daniel has been a longtime
supporter of Airline Ambassadors (the only humanitarian
organization of the airline industry). His money and medical
expertise along with his knowledge of disaster mitigation has made
it possible to hire a disaster Response Coordinator which is
increasing the significance of the contribution relief and
development in Haiti. Because of his extensive international
experience he was summoned from SE Asia to Port-au-Prince to
provide logistical support to Airline Ambassador's emergency
program immediately after the January 12, 2010 Haitian earthquake.
Airline Ambassadors sent over 600 medical personnel in 20 planes
and 3 million pounds of aid in the days and weeks following the
earthquake. Daniel spent 2 months in Haiti coordinating aid of
various kinds. He is interested in healing Haiti through culture,
art, and exploring eco tourism. A program has been created to
combat child trafficking, named after his mother Dr. Kathryn
Susott.
While swimming in Thailand on 26
December, 2004, he was swept up in the disastrous tsunami which
killed a quarter million people in Southeast Asia. He immediately
went to Sri Lanka to participate in relief efforts. Three months
later, he hosted Dr. Patch Adams and 30 clowns to bring healing
and laughter to the survivors of the tsunami, circling the island
in 2 weeks. He was a member of the first and only foreign medical
team (the Aloha Medical Mission in conjunction with Airline
Ambassadors) allowed into Myanmar after Cyclone Nargistore through
southern Myanmar in 2007 killing 200,000 people.
Following the earthquakes in Peru he
participated with Airline Ambassadors missions there, and also
went to the remote Peruvian Amazon with Amazon Promise (.org).
Long passionate about the Amazon, he and friends and 5
organizations bought a large tract of land in Ecuador which now
hosts an ecolodge, (www.amazondolphinlodge.com)
to further the dream of protecting what remains of the Amazon from
development and exploitation. He was a founding board member in
1984 of the New York Rainforest Alliance (www.rainforest-alliance.org) and
the Wortroot Corporation, a land-trust which is an early version
of the Nature Conservancy, protecting a vulnerable watershed on
the Tennessee-Virginia border. He was also a supporting member of
the renewed version of Physicians for Social Responsibility while
in his internship
Dr. Susott is a key supporter for
OnePeace Jerusalem (.org), part of Earth Dance, 2010, a
simultaneous prayer for Peace, in honor of his mother. He has
participated in medical missions with Los Medicos Voladores (www.FlyingDocs.org)
to El Salvador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic and to South
America where he funded an environmental-education center for
indigenous youth in Ecuador, the first of its kind in the Amazon.
He has traveled extensively with
humanitarian missions to Indonesia, Tibet, and East Timor. He is
the Founder and Chairman of the World Family Foundation, in
Cambodia, providing education and medical opportunities and
services to orphans and women, oral health, HIV/AIDS prevention,
literacy, computer training, building schools, and funding projects
to educate women and girls, preventing people from becoming
orphans and refugees ,and supporting programs that keep families
together. He put most of the money he inherited from his family
into the WORLD FAMILY Foundation because when you educate a woman
you educate a family. Along with LAURYN GALINDO Daniel's
“hanai sister‡ placed almost 1000
Cambodian orphans into loving families since 1990. He strives to
honor his mother's desire to help more girls and women to become
educated to become teachers and healers.
He was a general medical doctor in
urgent-care clinics and at Schofield Barracks Army Post in Hawaii
from 1997-2000. He worked in urgent care in Monterey Bay from
2005-2009 while caring for his elderly mother. In 1985-86, he was
the Senior Physician Consultant to the AIDS Initiative in public
hospitals of NYC's Health and Hospitals Corporation in New York
City, NY and coordinated their "AIDS teams". Immediately
following internship in Massachusetts in 1979 he served in the
refugee camps in Thailand, working as Medical Coordinator, CCSDPT
(Committee for Coordination of Services to Displaced Persons in
Thailand) and coordinating health care in 20 refugee camps serving
500,000 people, managing 60 NGO's and IOs through 1981. He was the
first Medical Coordinator for the UN Border Relief Operation, under
UNDP, on the Thai-Cambodian border in 1982. In 1986, he co-edited
